Level 1. Foundation CLIL Educator

1. Level Profile

Level 1 is designed for teachers or lecturers who:

  • Are new to the concepts of CLIL and EMI, or

  • Have already taught bilingually but have not yet utilized the CLIL framework systematically.

This level focuses on foundational understanding: what CLIL is, how to integrate content and language objectives, and how to prepare simple yet structured bilingual lessons.

2. Level 1 Objectives

  • Understand the basic principles of CLIL (The 4Cs: Content, Communication, Cognition, Culture).

  • Be able to formulate language objectives and content objectives in Lesson Plans (RPP/RPS).

  • Be able to use simple, communicative English in the classroom.

  • Initiate CLIL practice on a small scale (e.g., one unit or topic).

3. Key Competencies (Level 1)

By the end of Level 1, participants are expected to:

Conceptual Competence

  • Explain what CLIL is and how it differs from "simply teaching in English."

  • Recognize the role of language as a learning tool (language for learning, language of learning, language through learning).

Planning Competence

Write simple Lesson Plans (RPP/RPS) containing:

  • Clear content objectives (e.g., understanding the water cycle).

  • Specific language objectives (e.g., using vocabulary such as "evaporation, condensation, precipitation").

Classroom Language Competence

Use basic classroom expressions in English:

  • Giving simple instructions.

  • Checking for understanding ("Do you understand?", "Any questions?").

  • Managing group activities.

Reflective Competence

  • Identify initial strengths and challenges when attempting CLIL in the classroom.

  • Write short reflections after teaching.

4. Level 1 Indicators & Performance Evidence

Examples of evidence collected by participants:

  • 1–2 Basic CLIL Lesson Plans (covering 1 topic or learning unit).

  • A 10–15 minute Microteaching Video demonstrating:

    • The use of basic English in the classroom.

    • The successful delivery of content learning.

  • A Short Reflection Journal (1–2 pages) regarding the first experience applying CLIL.

Participants who meet all criteria will receive the certificate: "Level 1 – Foundation CLIL Educator"

5. Training & Coaching Format

  • CLIL Introduction Workshop (Theory & Practical Examples).

  • Practice Exercises in drafting language & content objectives.

  • Microteaching with feedback.

Suitable for: Novice CLIL teachers, subject teachers newly entering a bilingual program, and Master’s students preparing to teach bilingually for the first time.


Training Modules

Total: 6 Modules • 18–24 Training Hours (JP)

Module 1 — Introduction to CLIL & The 4C Framework

  • Description: Understanding the basic concept of CLIL, its rationale, benefits, and the 4C framework (Content, Communication, Cognition, Culture).

  • Outcome: Participants are able to explain CLIL and distinguish it from standard bilingual learning.

  • Activity: Mini lecture, video study, discussion.

  • Output: Understanding of CLIL concepts (quiz/worksheet).

  • Duration: 3 Hours

Module 2 — Drafting Content & Language Objectives

  • Description: Formulating learning goals for content and language that are specific, measurable, and realistic.

  • Outcome: Participants are able to write CLIL learning objectives for one meeting.

  • Activity: Objective writing workshop; peer review.

  • Output: 1 set of CLIL learning objectives (content + language).

  • Duration: 3 Hours

Module 3 — Classroom English Essentials for Bilingual Teaching

  • Description: Mastering classroom communication expressions and simple instructions to support learning.

  • Outcome: Teachers are able to use Classroom English proportionally.

  • Activity: Role play, model dialogue, pronunciation drilling.

  • Output: Classroom English Script.

  • Duration: 2 Hours

Module 4 — Basic CLIL Lesson Planning (RPP Design)

  • Description: Designing a simple lesson focused on 1 topic/unit.

  • Outcome: Participants are able to produce 1 basic CLIL Lesson Plan.

  • Activity: Lesson Plan design workshop; brief coaching.

  • Output: 1 Basic CLIL Lesson Plan.

  • Duration: 4 Hours

Module 5 — CLIL Microteaching (Basic Demo)

  • Description: Simple teaching practice (10–15 minutes) with basic language objectives.

  • Outcome: Teachers can perform microteaching with a simple CLIL flow.

  • Activity: Microteaching, mentor & peer feedback.

  • Output: Microteaching video.

  • Duration: 4 Hours

Module 6 — Reflection & Level 1 Action Plan

  • Description: Analyzing strengths, challenges, and personal development plans.

  • Outcome: Teachers produce a written reflection and an improvement plan.

  • Activity: Guided reflection, coaching.

  • Output: Reflection journal.

  • Duration: 2 Hours

LEVEL 1 SYLLABUS – FOUNDATION CLIL EDUCATOR

Duration: 18–24 Lesson Hours (LH) Target Audience: CLIL beginner teachers, bilingual teachers, new EMI lecturers, novice educators.

Level 1 training aims to provide a basic understanding of CLIL and initiate early implementation in the classroom. This program emphasizes concept mastery, formulating combined language & content objectives, and conducting basic microteaching.

Participants are able to:

  • Explain the CLIL concept and the 4C framework.

  • Formulate combined content + language learning objectives.

  • Use basic Classroom English.

  • Develop a Foundation CLIL Lesson Plan.

  • Conduct simple CLIL microteaching.

  • Perform reflection on teaching practice.
