Level 2. Applied CLIL Practitioner

1. Level Profile

Level 2 is intended for teachers/lecturers who:

  • Already understand CLIL fundamentals.

  • Have experimented with CLIL in the classroom (at least a few times).

  • Wish to strengthen the application of CLIL more systematically over a longer timeframe (e.g., one semester / one major theme).

2. Level 2 Objectives

  • Apply CLIL not just in a single session, but across a learning sequence (unit/theme).

  • Integrate language scaffolding techniques (visuals, sentence frames, word banks, etc.).

  • Develop classroom activities that foster higher-order thinking skills (HOTS).

  • Utilize assessments that consider both content and language.

3. Key Competencies for Level 2

Applied Instructional Design Competency

  • Developing a CLIL unit plan for multiple sessions (e.g., 4–6 sessions).

  • Designing activities that integrate:

    1. Reading, writing, listening, speaking; and

    2. Project-based tasks, experiments, or case studies.

Scaffolding Competency

Utilizing various learning supports:

  • Visual: Diagrams, images, infographics.

  • Linguistic: Sentence starters, word banks.

  • Staged Tasks: Guided → Semi-guided → Independent.

Bilingual Classroom Management Competency

  • Managing group discussions in English (or a structured mix).

  • Employing strategic L1 use (planned use of the native language/Indonesian, rather than dominant use).

Bilingual Assessment Competency

Creating simple instruments that assess:

  • Understanding of content concepts.

  • Use of basic academic language (e.g., explaining processes, comparing, concluding).

4. Level 2 Indicators & Evidence of Performance

Level 2 participants must submit:

  • 1 Complete CLIL Unit Plan (covering multiple sessions).

  • 2–3 examples of student worksheets (CLIL worksheets).

  • Assessment instruments and simple rubrics (content + language).

  • Instructional Video (real classroom footage, not just microteaching) demonstrating:

    • Clear language scaffolding.

    • Active student participation (student-centered).

  • Written Reflection regarding student learning outcomes and future improvements.

Upon successful evaluation, participants are entitled to the certificate: “Level 2 – Applied CLIL Practitioner.”

5. Training & Coaching Format

  • Individual coaching on unit plan design.

  • Lesson Study / peer observation with reflective discussion.

  • Development clinics for worksheets & assessment rubrics.

Suitable for: Teachers currently active in bilingual programs, lecturers teaching subjects via EMI (English Medium Instruction), and core teachers in CLIL/EMI partner schools.

Training Modules

Total: 7 Modules • 24–32 Lesson Hours

Module 1 — CLIL Concept Review & Teacher Readiness Diagnosis

  • Description: Reviewing core CLIL concepts and establishing a competence baseline.

  • Outcome: Participants have a clear picture of their self-capabilities & improvement needs.

  • Activities: Self-assessment, classroom video analysis.

  • Deliverable: Baseline Report.

  • Duration: 2 Hours

Module 2 — Intermediate Language Scaffolding

  • Description: Using more varied language support in instruction.

  • Outcome: Teachers are able to design scaffolding:

    1. Visual support

    2. Sentence frames

    3. Vocabulary banks

    4. Guided writing

  • Activities: Workshop; worksheet development.

  • Deliverable: 2 Scaffolding Worksheets.

  • Duration: 4 Hours

Module 3 — Higher-Order Thinking (HOTS) CLIL Activities

  • Description: Designing HOTS-based activities integrated with language.

  • Outcome: Teachers are able to create CLIL activities based on analysis, evaluation, and creation.

  • Activities: Activity design; peer review.

  • Deliverable: 2 HOTS CLIL Activities.

  • Duration: 4 Hours

Module 4 — CLIL Unit Plan Design (Multi-Session Planning)

  • Description: Building a lesson plan for 1 unit topic (3–6 sessions).

  • Outcome: CLIL Unit Plan with a staged learning progression.

  • Activities: Workshop on multi-session sequencing.

  • Deliverable: 1 Complete CLIL Unit Plan.

  • Duration: 6 Hours

Module 5 — Bilingual Classroom Management & EMI Discourse

  • Description: Managing class discussions, group work, and academic language.

  • Outcome: Teachers are able to guide structured academic interaction.

  • Activities: Role play, classroom interaction analysis.

  • Deliverable: Classroom Discourse Script.

  • Duration: 4 Hours

Module 6 — Bilingual Assessment (Content-Language Assessment)

  • Description: Designing rubrics and instruments that assess content + language.

  • Outcome: Simple bilingual assessment rubric.

  • Activities: Workshop & case study.

  • Deliverable: 1 Rubric + 1 Assessment Instrument.

  • Duration: 4 Hours

Module 7 — Teaching Practice (Real Classroom) + Reflection

  • Description: Real teaching practice or extended microteaching (20–30 minutes).

  • Outcome: Implementation of the applied CLIL model.

  • Activities: Teaching demo; mentoring feedback.

  • Deliverable: Practice Video + Reflection Report.

  • Duration: 4–6 Hours

LEVEL 2 SYLLABUS – APPLIED CLIL PRACTITIONER

Duration: 24–32 Lesson Hours (LH) Target Audience: Teachers already teaching bilingual classes and who have completed Level 1.
